Many Western breeders and dog clubs are
adamantly opposed to exporting to Asia. What do you think of that?
Do you only import dogs?
Who are you? At this time "Import Dogs" is only my
wife and I. I am Mike Lyons, a Canadian permanent resident of Japan. My wife
Miki is Japanese. We are both English teachers and dog enthusiasts.
What is this service? Japanese would-be
puppy-buyers access this website and contact us. We offer to locate and
introduce appropriate breeders overseas. Optionally we offer translation and
import paperwork.
How do you find breeders? We prefer to import from
Australia, and our first stop is DogzOnline, but we also contact breed clubs,
ask breeder friends, etc.
What does the service cost the breeder? Nothing.
Our fee is paid by the Japanese buyer.
Are you a 3rd-party to the sale? No. After we make
the introduction, the breeder and buyer converse directly (with translation if
necessary). We understand why good breeders refuse 3rd-party sales and we agree
completely. We hate resellers and puppy brokers.
Do you guarantee the reliability of the buyer? No.
And we don't guarantee the professionalism of the breeder either. Obviously, if
we suspect either buyer or breeder is unreliable we decline our service.
What do you do instead to guarantee the safety of the
puppy then? We do this service! We put the parties in direct contact and
allow the breeders to assess the buyers' reliability directly. Good breeders
know how to do this far better than we do.
What are conditions like for dogs in Japan? It
depends on the owner, just like anywhere else.
Many Western breeders and dog clubs are adamantly
opposed to exporting to Asia. What do you think of that? I think cultural
change comes with dialog. Those who are not open to discussion don't want to
change anything. Overseas breeders who want to improve conditions for dogs in
Japan should get to know some Japanese pet-owners, not shun them.
Do you only import dogs? No. We import cats too
when we are asked - the import regulations are the same as with dogs.
